520 _aFreedom and Human Rights: Islamic and Western Perspectives seeks to provide a cursory review of the philosophical conceptions of human rights in the West by tracing them from a historical perspective. The book identifies some key aspects of human rights through which a comparative study between Islam and the Western perspective on human right should be undertaken. The comparative analysis between Western political thought on human right and the Tawhidic paradigm allows for a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences between the two worldviews. The approach used in this small work highlights the possible areas for negotiating common principles between the Shariah conception of human rights and the Western liberal democratic principles which form the theoretical foundation for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
